Insights for Situational Leadership

Blanchard and Hersey characterized leadership style in terms of the amount of direction  and support a follower requires – naming this situational leadership.  Since leaders tend to have a preferred style, it takes intentional focus to assess the situation and determine the most powerful approach – and not just choose the approach that would be most in line with one’s own preference.

The Insights for Situational Leadership program is designed for leaders who want to be the best they can be while they coach for increased performance.  Participants build on the Insights Discovery language and framework for understanding themselves, understanding others, and adapting and connecting.  The format of the program is practice, practice, practice.  All participants will have numerous opportunities to try on new skills for different coaching situations.  If you are committed to applying your coaching skills to a range of practical day-to-day coaching situations this program will meet your expectations.

A pre-requisite of this program is attendance at an Insights for Personal Effectiveness or participation in the two introductory on-line modules, The Key to Personal Effectiveness, and Recognizing Type and Connecting with Others.

Insightful Coaching

Coaching is a collaborative partnership that builds on the strengths of participants and adds the missing links to achieve lasting success. Coaching assists in creating a clear picture of professional, organizational and personal goals providing strategies and tools to go beyond previously abandoned or delayed goals with a new, sustainable determination.

Just as successful athletes work with coaches to improve performance, you too can work with a coach to advance areas in your life. Each coaching session will utilize the framework of the Insights Discovery System, designed to build on each person’s strengths, while also identifying key areas of improvement.

Each coaching session is built upon a series of questions, which are intended to guide the dialogue between the coach and the client. Examining and gaining commitment to key areas of action closes the coaching cycle.

Coaching can take place with individuals or groups. Face-to-face coaching can be supported by telephone or e-mail contact. A coach can work to a specific schedule,  provide long term support, or be brought in to accelerate change or a specific project.

 What are the corporate benefits?

In a corporate environment, coaching is most applicable in work settings where high performance and continuous personal improvement are a requirement. Organizational benefits of coaching include:

·         Improved communications

·         Increased productivity

·         Enhanced employee engagement

·         Improved knowledge transfer and application

"A whopping 98.5% of coaching clients said their investment in a coach was well worth the money, according to an International Coaching Federation survey. 'Coaching is the most potent tool for inducing positive personal change, ensuring better-than-average odds for success and making the change stick for the longer term.' The Ivey Business Journal recently stated."

Excerpt from April 2001 issue of BC Business Magazine.

Coaching outcomes focus on the corporate team and corporate vision, mission, values and strategy. Results are measured against the performance requirements of the organization.  Once a needs assessment is complete, a customized program and ROI measurement can be designed to assess success. Following this, individualized coaching commences and addressing the following:

Coach  - Client Partnership: an initial 2 hour meeting to debrief the Insights Discovery Profile and set out goals for the coaching process. This may be accomplished in person, via e-mail, or over the phone. Please note, some of the tasks involved in designing the alliance can be accomplished by the client individually reducing the time allocated to this process.

Commitment: an initial 3 month commitment is required with options to extend. The frequency of sessions will be mutually determined.

Follow-up and follow through processes to ensure clarity of direction and success.

Insightful Mediation

"A team-member's commitment to the team and the team mission can decrease if intra-team conflict remains unresolved. ...if unhealthy conflict goes unresolved for too long, team members are likely to leave the company or use valuable time to search for alternatives." *

What is Insightful Mediation?

Every interaction raises issues that have the potential of raising difference, so, of course conflict will occur.  The workplace is filled with people who have different wants, needs, and expectations. So, of course, conflicts will occur. The trouble isn't necessarily the fact that conflict exists; it's how we deal with those conflicts or what happens when they aren't resolved. The impact of unresolved conflict in the workplace can be devastating - to the parties involved, to colleagues and teams, to clients, and to the business as a whole.

Insightful Mediation is a productive way to address issues that arise on the workplace. Through facilitated dialogue, each party gains insight into the cares and concerns that underlie the conflict.  Using the Insights Discovery Profile, the mediator assists each party to discover their interests, appreciate differing perspectives and is encourages each party to create a shared experience of resolution. Thus, supporting the foundation of the Insights Discovery Model:

·         Understand self

·         Understand other

·         Adapt and connect

Who might benefit from Insightful Mediation?

A co-operative and productive workplace is the goal of all organizations.  Disputes are often time consuming and costly disrupting the workplace and distracting all parties. Whether conflict exists between two parties or amongst team members, coming to appreciate the interests of others is a key part of resolving conflict and re-engaging employees in the workplace.

Mediation is a voluntary, informal process for two or more people who are in dispute and wish to engage in a facilitated discussion to jointly agree how better to work together.  The timeframe for mediation depends on the size of the group, the length of time the issue has been left unresolved and  the nature of  issue in dispute.

How does it work?

The process of mediation begins with an assessment of the appropriateness of mediation as an option for resolution and an assessment of the willingness of the parties to engage. Once these essential elements are established, a pre-session interview meeting is set-up to establish rapport and build understanding of the issues to be resolved. The Insights Discovery Profile is also employed to provide a foundation for effective communication and assisting in identify potential barriers to effective resolution. A pre-session meeting lasts for approximately 1-2 hours.
