Vancouver Regional Conference Highlights

Another year – another great conference!

Well over 80 members of the Insights community gathered December 5th at the Pan Pacific Hotel in downtown Vancouver for the 11th annual Insights Regional Conference.

After opening remarks by Ken Blosser, Director of Operations at Insights Vancouver, and a ‘get acquainted’ scavenger hunt led by Kim White, Insights Vancouver Senior Consultant, Spencer Gillman, Marketing Manager for Insights Learning and Development Global delivered the keynote address “Immediate Impact-Endless Possibilities”.

Eleven different Cracker Barrel sessions were offered, and attendees had the opportunity to participate in 3 different fifteen-minute sessions and take part in fast-paced learning to review resources they can use for strengthening application of the Insights Discovery system within their organizations.   Deborah Edwards, Activing AVP, HR and Organizational Development for Coastal Community along with Joyce Gwilliam, President of Insights Vancouver treated guests to their presentation “Engage, Empower & Enrich”, showcasing how leaders applied best practices in change, innovative technology and a balanced approach to building engagement on a major change initiative at Coastal Community.

The networking luncheon was followed by the Executive Roundtable, featuring client stories about Insights in Action.  Speakers included Denise Buchanan, VP Human Resources at White Spot; David Walker, Director, Resource Development with the Alzheimer Society of BC; and Loree Gray, Vice President Retail Banking, Envision Financial.   This was followed by extended break-out sessions featuring Best Practices in Action, focused on Healthy Workplaces, Team Effectiveness, Performance Management, and Leadership.

After a stretch break and coffee top-up, Cathy Anderson, Portfolio Education Manager with Insights Global led guests through a 30 minute session to consider ways they currently deliver Insights within their organizations, and explore new opportunities and resources available to them.

The afternoon closed with Poetry by Sue McIntyre, City of Burnaby, who treated attendees to poetry created during the conference.  Her two works \”the colour of possibility\” and \”A Day Like AnyOther\” are available by following the links.

Networking, wine and appetizers followed closing remarks by Joyce Gwilliam, President of Insights Vancouver.  Conference evaluations are still coming in but it’s clear to see attendees ranked this conference the best ever, with many indicating the cracker barrel sessions in the morning and the new-this-year extended learning break-out sessions in the afternoon as their favorite part of the day.  Oh, and the networking!  So many noted the opportunity to visit with other members of the Insights Community of Practice, share ideas – borrow ideas – reconnect with fellow practitioners, and learn new and exciting ways to deepen the Insights Discovery learning within their own places of business.

Many thanks to our speakers, cracker barrel facilitators and guests in attendance.  You all contributed to a highly successful day.  We look forward to seeing you at the 12th Annual Vancouver Regional Conference scheduled for Monday, December 3, 2012.

Largest Accreditation Wraps Up in Vancouver

The largest Insights Discovery Accreditation in North America for 2011 wrapped up last week in Vancouver.  This accreditation session, like all the previous sessions held in Vancouver, was over-subscribed, and individuals are already making plans to attend the next Vancouver session scheduled for May 1-4, 2012.

This is what it looks like when three IDA Faculty (Amber Wendover of Insights Seattle, and Joyce Gwilliam and Anne Bishop of Insights Vancouver) put their heads together to deliver a fun-filled learning-packed four day session.

This Insights Discovery Accreditation saw twenty individuals receive the necessary training to take Insights into their own organizations.  By the looks on the faces, it appears everyone was happy with the results.

If you would like information about the Insights Discovery Accreditation process, or want to learn more about bringing the Insights System into your company or organization, contact our office.  If you’re planning to register for the 2012 session, we suggest you do so now and avoid disappointment.

Mining the Power of the Portfolio

The bar has been raised for optimizing the value of the Insights Discovery Profile and to build on the Discovery foundation.  Based on discussions with clients, we anticipate a three fold increase in the use of the Discovery series.  As organizations move beyond Insights for Personal Effectiveness, it is expected that the most popular program areas will be:

  • Discovering Team Effectiveness,
  • Discovering Leadership Effectiveness, and
  • Discovering Sales Effectiveness.

If you are an Insights Discovery Practitioner, remember that you can link to http://connections.insights.com for the Facilitator & Coach notes.  Remember too, that you might choose to work with your Client Manager to arrange for direct delivery if your time does not allow for the preparation at this time.

If you need more information about accessing Facilitator and Coach notes, or how to use the tools available on the Connections site, please contact us.

One Retirement plus A New Addition

Vancouver office announces one retirement and one new addition

For many of you that visited our office in the early days, you may remember Nelly.  She was our C.A.T. (Chief Attitude Technician).  Since our move 4 years ago to our new office space, Nelly has been working remotely and has recently decided to move to full retirement.

As part of our succession planning, Kim White from our team has been grooming her friend Nessie (for our Scottish friends, she was indeed named after the Loch Ness attraction) for an expanded role within our organization.  Nessie will now take a permanent part-time role with our office as the D.O.G. (Director of Gladness).  We expect our gladness survey results to increase by leaps and bounds over the coming months.

Please send any best wishes to Nellie or Nessie to info@insightsvancouver.com

Another 60Km and $2,475.00 Raised!

Sharyn, Linda & Manjeet Celebrate their Walk

Eight years ago, Insights Vancouver’s Executive Assistant Sharyn Skalnik  founded the ‘Everyone’s Daughter Team’ and started walking in the Weekend to End Women’s Cancers Walk in Vancouver.   That first year, she was joined by Joyce Gwilliam and Manjeet Gill, and over the years others from Insights Vancouver have taken part in the event with her.

This year, it was personal and Sharyn, who walked in honour of her courageous best friend Tracey in celebration of her winning the fight against breast cancer, was joined by Manjeet and cancer survivor Linda Knowlton.  Sharyn’s goal this year was to raise $2000 and supporters, friends and co-workers helped her exceed that goal by almost 25%!

Here’s what she said after the August 13-14 event:

“What can I say about a weekend that not only helps to save lives, but makes me so happy and proud to have such awesome supporters.  The Weekend to End Women’s Cancers went off without a hitch this weekend.  The weather co-operated fully (no rain – yippee), and the woman that walked, 9 months along in her pregnancy, managed to finish it without going into labour! The food was great and the company was amazing.  I personally can say that I finished blister-free, which is not an easy feat/feet!  Many of my co-walkers were not so lucky.

Whatever the reason was that made you donate to my walk; please know that I really appreciate every penny.  “You make a living by what you get;  you make a life by what you give.”  Thank you all for helping me to give.

Sincerely,
Sharyn Skalnik
“Everyone’s Daughter” proud team member since 2004

In total, Sharyn has now walked over 480 kilometers and raised over $18,000 for this important cause.  Insights Vancouver is proud to support your extraordinary efforts.

Congratulations Sharyn and all the other walkers, volunteers and supporters of this year’s event.  Your continued commitment is vital to the ongoing successful research to find a cure for cancer in our lifetime.

Another Minerva Story Contest Winner

Insights Vancouver has been an active supporter of The Minerva Foundation for BC Women since 2002.  We’ve been overwhelmed by the positive feedback we’ve received about the value of the Insights experience to participants – whether they be seasoned leaders or those beginning their leadership journey.  In the spirit of reaching out and inspiring others, we invited attendees of the June Learning to Lead – Combining our Strength session to share their experience of how Insights has impacted them, or how they’ve used this learning to impact others.

The words “thank you” are not enough and I cannot even put how I feel into words.  If you are willing and open to personal transformation, then “Insights” is for you.  Holly Hansen

We offered an Insights Discovery Foundation Profile, and a one-hour debrief session to give as a gift to a friend, significant other, or family member, valued at over $400.00

We’re happy to announce Wendy Bolton of Kitamaat BC has been awarded one of our prizes.  Here is her winning entry.

“When I applied to attend MINERVA’s Combining Our Strength, conference I didn’t know what to expect. I went to the conference sort of apprehensive about what it was going to be all about. I left with hope and enlightenment. Our home group named the “Wolf” consisted of nine Haisla women; we must have all had that feeling or thought “I wonder what is going to happen this weekend?” I am happy to state that this was one of the best conferences I have been to. As one of our group members said, “This was meant to be” Everyone in our group feels the same way, we attended this conference separated by differences and disunity. We came home with hope. The exercises and discussions at our table were carried out in a calm, respectful manner. We covered a lot and we reconnected. We left the conference as friends which I am sure makes each of us feel confident that we will make our women’s group a success. We made a commitment to work together to build a women’s group called the “Wolf Pack”. We have had one planning meeting already and have an activity planned to invite other women of all ages. This is very exciting! We have agreed to take turns facilitating the meetings so that each of us has an opportunity to practise our leadership skills and the role is not left up to one person. Some of our activities planned will be crafts, collection traditional medicines, canning salmon, smoking salmon, cooking, having a Mother/daughter evening, to name a few.

This is the first time I have come home and actually talked about a conference and what a great time I had. I encourage other women to apply for this conference if the opportunity is there.

As an individual, I have learned from this experience about what type of leader I am. What works for me, what anchors me down. I like to look at my “weaknesses” as opportunities to grow. I am looking forward to growing as a person, as a leader and as an example to the Haisla children and our Grandchildren. I want to see a legacy of working together, of being happy, and working for the betterment of ourselves and each other.  I have learned that we all have the same desires and it is up to each individual to make a choice, make goals, and to carry through with these plans. No one else will do it for you. When I told my daughter what we were doing she said to me, “Mom, I am proud of you” I am proud of us too.”

Congratulations to Wendy and all our conference participants.  We look forward to seeing you again next year!
