The ‘journey’ metaphor is often used to frame the Insights learning experience. Sometimes, it’s about the internal journey undertaken as participants begin to learn more about themselves and how to adapt and connect to others. But sometimes, the journey is more than internal.
Senior Learning Consultant Cheney Creamer recently took a physical journey to introduce Insights learning to the teachers and staff of Klappan Independent Day School in Iskut, BC. Located on the Tahltan Nation about 88 kilometers south of Dease Lake, Iskut is a six-to-seven hour drive from Terrace or Smithers. Iskut is very proud to be the first ‘independent’ health service centre for a first nations community in Canada, with a staff of professionals to help with mental and physical health problems.
The Klapplan Independent Day School serves grades K-9 and the principal worked with Cheney to integrate Insights Discovering Personal Effectiveness into the year-end wrap up for staff. The remote location and the difficulty to access resources combine to create unusual challenges to staff development and retention. In spite of their isolation, their prime objective continues to be ‘to serve the children’ and they believe every child deserves a good education in a safe and happy place they can go to every day.
During the session, Klappan staff learned to maximize the limited time they have to connect and meet with each other, and worked to introduce the Insights language into their organization. Participants commented that, just like their own First Nations language, if they don’t continue to use the Insights language they will lose it, so serious efforts will be taken to continue to weave their new learning into their ongoing training and development.
Cheney will continue to work with this group and a follow-up webinar is being considered for the fall to build on the learning and help them continue the journey.
